Imagine this: You are at school one day and you are able to get up and leave, with no question’s asked and without your parent’s consent. Should this be allowed in the San Juan Unified School District? I believe this is important to Cosumnes Oaks High School students because maybe one day we will be able to decide if we can have this opportunity. It sounds like it would be a good thing for the students, but the parent’s do not like the idea at all. It’s hard to decide if they should give this big responsibility to the students, because I don’t believe all students would leave to do something good. I think that students would take advantage, and leave when it is not necessary for them too. I also believe that parents do have a right to be mad, because they can be thinking that their child is attending school but there really not.
Parents are extremely angry at the San Juan Unified School Board. They believe that it will affect every parent s’ lives greatly. Parents claim that they have already taken too much stuff away from them, and this is just another thing. Craig Delaruz, a parent, said “We’re talking about the school district stepping in and playing the role of the parent.” The last thing parents want is for the administration to try and play the role of the parent; their not there for that. Parents say that the school district shouldn’t have the right to establish rights of schools. Parents do not want their kids to go to the doctors without them, or if a teenage female leaves to go get an abortion, or some teenagers using drugs. “The school day is at least 7 hours, and there is a lot of damage that can be done between those hours,” says Kris, a mom. A final thought from one of the mom stated, “We’re not allowed to give them aspirin for goodness sake. You can’t get your ears pierced. You can’t get a tattoo without parental consent, so what would they be able to do without our consent?”
So in the end, should the San Juan Unified School District allow this to happen within the school in the area? What if this idea were to come across Consumnes Oaks High School? Do you think parents would be just as mad at some of the parent s in San Juan? How do you think the students would react to it? I believe it is too much of a responsibly for young teenage kids to handle. After a while, it could get out of hand and the administration won’t like the idea to much either.
