At Sacramento State University on Wednesday, October 21st, a student of Sac State was murdered in the dorms.  20 year old Quran Jones was seen holding a knife to his face and hitting himself in the head with a baseball bat moments after the attack on 23 year old Scott Hawkins, who later died in the emergency room.”It is scary and it just makes you think anything could happen, even if you feel safe,” student Gina Schowlander said.  Many students are considering attending Sacramento state, and many will apply for admission in the spring. Without prior knowledge of such an attack, students will be blindly entering space that may be dangerous. It is important to know the full history of the school, whether it pertains to the academic environment or social living.

Campus police, when first contact was made with Jones, said he was holding a knife and standing near a bloody unconscious body, which wasthe body of Scott Hawkins.  Officers tried to subdue knife-wielding Jones with a weapon that shoots balls filled with pepper powder but Jones still charged the officers even after the pepper ball gun was deployed.  Police then fired seven pepper balls into Jones’ chest, also three bullets were fired into Jones when he approached the officers. In the ambulance Jones repeatedly lied to officers about his name and he told them the attack was started by his roommate who had shot him.

Residence advisor also heard officers say, “he’s stabbing himself,” referring to Jones moments before the shots were fired.  Police say Jones had a crazed look in his eyes, “one eye was looking one way, the other eye looking another way,” according to the police.  A note was also found in Jones’ trash which read, “If Quran Muhammed Jones ever dies, he, Quran Muhammed Jones, orders you to put his body in an incinerator so that every atom of his body is burned away, thank you.”  Many say that Jones had just gone crazy.  Do you believe Quran Jones should get the insanity plea after all of this?

Jones is still recovering in the hospital. When he is released, he’ll be taken directly to jail where he’ll await his first court hearing for charges of homicide and attempted murder of a police officer. Sacramento state is a highly acclaimed campus of learning that is in our surrounding community, so a malicious attack like this should be known by us COHS students, especially if we are considering living in dorms while attending college.
