PunkSlam – The Sacramento Punk Scene

Sacramento has a great local music scene for punk rock. The bands are amazingly talented, and it would be a great experience for you to go to one of the shows. I think it would be a good experience for Cosumnes Oaks students, because it gives them a reason to want to try listening to different types of music, and have some good fun that doesn’t cost much money at all.
The Sacramento punk scene is fronted by bands such as: The Secretions, Final Summation, Ashtray, The Phenomenauts, and the Re-Volts. They play shows fairly often at venues such as: Club Retro, The Boardwalk, R-5 Records, and the Java Lounge. Most people feel uncomfortable being around music they feel is too extreme or too loud. They also may not like the idea of people attacking each other in the circle pit, but it really is a fun experience for people to see. You don’t have to participate in the pit if you don’t want to; the real fun is listening to good music and meeting new people. All you have to do is sit in the back, and just listen. Although, if you want to have real fun, you could get in and start skanking, which is a type of dance that punks do at the shows, and that helps you have a good time too. Also, the people are very friendly and it’s very easy to be accepted. You don’t need to go in with studs, leather, chains, and green hair to be accepted.
Most people really don’t give the harder styles of music a chance, and only try to listen to what is “radio friendly”, but in all actuality, if you want to have a good time, bring an open mind, five dollars, and look into seeing a punk show.
