The population of the world is more than 6 billion people. Out of those 6 billion there are 304 million Americans, there are 1.3 billion Chinese, and there are 1 billion people starving without food or water. Since Sunday, the 15th of November, the United Nations has launched an online appeal, an appeal to help eradicate worldwide starvation, an appeal to reach a helping hand out to over one billion people living without food or water. The World Food Programme’s “Billion for a Billion” campaign plans to ask internet users for at least one US dollar or Euro a week. Doing so could reach out to the one in six people of the world living without food or water.
Year in and year out, governments around the world do what they can to help solve this global problem and diminish the amount of people living in starvation. Although the governments of the world donate millions, if not billions of dollars worldwide to fight starvation, they cannot do it alone. Average people like you, the people reading this particular article, can make a difference. With simple donations of a dollar a day, a billion could be fed properly. Even world leaders are doing what they can. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon is planning on fasting for 24 hours in order to place himself in the shoes of those starving.
A billion may seem like an unfathomable number, and feeding a billion may seem even more unfathomable, but any help at all does indeed make a difference, whether the UN reaches its goal or not. Just think, for a simple dollar you could help feed someone living in starvation. Think about 6 people you know. Now, imagine one of them living without food or water. Imagine that scenario, but multiply it a billion times. If you still can’t imagine a billion, think of a large sum, a million perhaps? There are a thousand millions in a billion. You can simply be a compassionate person by easily donating a single dollar to a cause that will make a difference on a global scale by helping feed people living in starvation.
